Clarification on HIPAA Compliance Options

Hi VAPI Team,

I’m a startup founder exploring VAPI to build a voice agent for a HIPAA-compliant product. I would like some clarification on following:

  1. Your documentation mentions that enabling HIPAA mode is included in the $0.05/min platform fee, while the HIPAA zero-retention add-on costs $1,000. Could you clarify what level of HIPAA compliance is provided simply by turning on the HIPAA mode without the add-on? As a bootstrapped startup, we want to understand our HIPAA options without incurring the additional cost.
  2. When HIPAA mode is enabled, what information does VAPI return in terms of call summaries? Will we receive full transcripts and/or audio recordings so that we can store and process the data on our side?
