Integrate vapi with an existing phone number

I want to integrate vapi to a phone number I use on a daily basis to call my friends and family. This is an Indian phone number. This is a non-twilio, non-vonage phone number, I want to integrate vapi to this so that an assistant answers calls on my behalf.

@smruthi That sounds like a great idea! To integrate VAPI with your existing Indian phone number, you would first need to port your number into VAPI's system. Since your number is not with Twilio or Vonage, we would need to follow a specific process to port your number from your current provider to VAPI. Here's what you need to do: 1. Check Porting Eligibility: Ensure that your number is eligible for porting. You can usually find this information by contacting your current service provider. 2. Gather Required Information: You will need to provide certain details such as your account number with your current provider, the service address associated with the phone number, and possibly a Letter of Authorization (LOA). 3. Initiate the Porting Process: Once you have all the necessary information, you can start the porting process through the VAPI dashboard or by contacting VAPI support to assist you with the process. Please note that porting a number usually takes some time and might involve downtime during the transition. Also, there might be specific regulations and porting fees applicable for Indian phone numbers. Would you like to start the porting process now, or do you need more information on this? You can continue this conversation by mentioning me in the message.

You have to use SIP for using local numbers. Check if India Goverment allows SIP servers outside India.

@Shubham Bajaj This is what perplexity.ai says. "The Indian government allows the use of SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) servers outside India primarily for international calls. While domestic SIP trunking is restricted, enterprises can utilize SIP for making calls to foreign destinations without regulatory challenges. However, pure SIP trunking for nationwide calls within India is not permitted due to local regulations. For Indian telecom service providers, a hybrid approach using SIP over PRI is common, which involves physical termination at customer premises. For example, Knowlarity utilizes a hybrid SIP over PRI setup for its services in India, aligning with local telecom regulations" With this info, please clarify if there is any way to put agents behind local phone numbers in India.

You have to check with local telephony providers first.
