Feature 5 of 5 in our Launch Week series
When voice agents make outbound calls, accurately distinguishing between a human answer and voicemail can be challenging. Mistakes here are costly—not just financially, but also in lost time and user frustration. Traditional voicemail detection methods often fall short, resulting in two common issues:
- False Positives: Treating a human like voicemail, causing missed opportunities and negative customer experiences.
- False Negatives: Misinterpreting voicemail as a live person, wasting resources and inflating operational costs.
What's New
To address these problems directly, we integrated advanced voicemail detection models from Google and OpenAI into the Vapi platform. These models significantly improve detection accuracy by clearly distinguishing human interactions from voicemails, resulting in fewer mistakes and more efficient calls.
This integration also simplifies setup:
- Easily select between Google or OpenAI as your provider directly in your dashboard.
- Quickly configure settings like listening durations and customize your voicemail prompts.
What's Ahead
While today’s release improves call reliability immediately, we’re continuing to build on this foundation:
- Multilingual Detection: Improving voicemail recognition across different languages for global deployments.
- Regular Model Iterations: Continuously refining the models to ensure accuracy keeps improving as new data and techniques become available.
Why It Matters
Accurate voicemail detection directly impacts call effectiveness. By clearly identifying voicemail versus human answers, you avoid unnecessary expenses and provide smoother, more consistent experiences for users.
